Deportivo disappoint at home
Saturday 17 April 2004RC Deportivo La Coruña's faint hopes of claiming the Primera División title effectively disappeared as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Real Valladolid CF.
Six-point gap
The UEFA Champions League semi-finalists have only five games left this season and trail second-placed Real Madrid CF – who travel to city neighbours Club Atlético de Madrid later on Saturday – by six points. Leaders Valencia CF are a further point ahead and play at home to Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Sunday night.
Deadly counterattack
Valladolid took the lead on the stroke of half-time when leading scorer Óscar finished off a slick counterattack with a pin-point left-foot shot after racing on to a neat through-ball from Fernando Sales.
Djalminha spot on
The visitors had several good chances to extend their lead early in the second half, but Deportivo levelled when substitute Djalminha won himself a penalty after he was bundled over by José Luis Caminero in the area. The Brazilian midfield player took the spot-kick himself, coolly slotting home past Albano Bizzarri to make it 1-1.
