Coach profile: Maren Meinert
Sunday 1 January 2006After stepping up to replace Tina Theune-Meyer as coach of Germany's all-conquering senior team, Silvia Neid handed the responsibility for the running of the next generation of stars to her former team-mate and assistant Maren Meinert. And in her first season in sole charge Meinert led Germany to the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship semi-finals, confirming a defence of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
One of the greatest female players ever, the 31-year-old scored 33 goals in 92 internationals and won three UEFA European Women's Championships and the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup - scoring the equalising goal in the 2-1 final defeat of Sweden. Meinert won domestic honours with FCR Duisburg prior to a move to Boston Breakers, where she was voted the WUSA's Most Valuable Player in 2003.
Meinert had no coaching experience prior to Hungary, but finished top of her class when earning the German Football Association's highest coaching licence. She is also a qualified sports teacher having graduated with a degree in physical education.
